ESMTP - Why is Port 25 Blocked?

For several years now, senders of unsolicited bulk email have increasingly taken advantage of the large number of vulnerable systems available on the internet to generate bulk mailings. By sending the messages from hundreds or thousands of compromised hosts, the unscrupulous emailer hopes not only to mask their location, but also to thwart bulk email filters.

General Information Overview

Once you have a CS account, you have access to the electronic mail system using any IMAP or POP enabled email client. Using an IMAP or POP email client will allow you to send messages to and receive messages from other users either within the CS Department or at other sites inside or outside of Princeton University.

For information on how to configure some of the more popular email clients, please see the CS Guide, and specifically the section on email configuration and setup.

Helpful Mailing Lists

For questions that are outside of the scope of the department computing infrastructure, you might see if there is an appropriate department mailing list where you can post your question (e.g., the linux-users mailing list for a Linux-related question). The Joining a Mailing List page has more information. Of course, questions posted to such mailing lists will not generally be answered by members of CS Staff but by members of the particular mailing list.
