For questions that are outside of the scope of the department computing infrastructure, you might see if there is an appropriate department mailing list where you can post your question (e.g., the linux-users mailing list for a Linux-related question). Of course, questions posted to such mailing lists will not generally be answered by members of CS Staff but by members of the particular mailing list.
