Submitting Print Jobs
To have a file printed, use the command lpr filename where filename is the name of the file you want to print.
Note: if you use wildcard expansion (e.g., lpr *
) make sure that no more than 30 files are specified. If more than 30 files are specified, nothing will print and you will get no notification of the failure.
Viewing PostScript
PostScript files can be viewed as well as printed, To view a PostScript file on Unix system, you may use a PostScript display program, such as gs (GhostScript) or one of its companion programs, such as ghostview/gv or gsview/ggv, which include a number of options to make viewing documents on the screen easier.
Print Spooler Software
To handle the spooling of print jobs to the printers, we currently use a package named CUPS, (the Common UNIX Printing System) from Easy Software Products. CUPS accepts a variety of different file formats, and automatically converts them to PostScript before sending the file to the printer. If you discover a file type which CUPS cannot convert properly, please send e-mail to csstaff@cs.princeton.edu.
Printer Trouble / Supplies
If you discover that a printer is not working properly, is jammed, needs toner/ink, or has an error message on the display, please send email to csstaff@cs.princeton.edu, so that we can fix the problem. Note that we do not, in general, leave toner/ink supplies by the printers, as you need to have some experience with the printers in order to prevent damage while replacing the consumables.
Please do not change printer settings using the front panel.
General Printer Information
Printers are available on each floor of the Computer Science building. All department printers are at least PostScript Level 2 devices. In addition, all are capable of duplex (two-sided) printing, while some can also do color printing. For a list of printers, with their locations and features, such as duplex and color, run the printers command or lpstat -p -d on any of the departmental unix systems.
To support the University's Sustainability Plan, users are encouraged to "Print-less."
