Custom Email Aliases

The CS Department does not support custom email aliases in a traditional sense. However, we have configured our mail servers in such a way that you can generate an arbitrary number of custom addresses based on your original email address. While these will still include your real email address, they can be useful for various purposes, such as signing up to external mailing lists with an address that you can easily identify.

Like many sendmail implementations, our servers allow +detail addressing, such that you can add a plus sign ('+') and any desired text after the username part of your email address. For instance, all of the following addresses will be delivered to user@cs.princeton.edu:

  • user+detail@cs.princeton.edu
  • user+some-detail@cs.princeton.edu
  • user+some+detail@cs.princeton.edu
  • user+some.detail@cs.princeton.edu

For the sake of clarity about what will work and what will not, the first instance of a '+' is the delimiter for detail. Anything after that character is up to you.
