Host Registration

Host Registration

In order to use the wired network in the CS Building, a host (the generic term for a network-connected device) must be registered on the CS network. The wireless network in the CS Building is run by OIT.  Wireless set up instructions are located here.

Registration of hosts on the CS network is only available to those with CS Accounts who are any of:

  • CS Faculty or Staff
  • CS Graduate Students
  • Declared CS Undergraduate Students (A.B, P.A.C, B.S.E)
  • CS Course Account holders (upon instructor approval)

Note that registered hosts will be administratively de-registered when the associated account is removed (e.g., leaving the department or at the end of a semester for Course Accounts) or changes to a type that is not listed above (e.g., changing to alumni status).

You can register a new host by going to the "Host Registration" form available to the left. You can also attach an un-registered machine, using a wired connection, to the CS network and then use the NetReg system to register a new host on the CS network. Once the form is submitted you will receive an email letting you know that the host is registered and can be used on the CS network. This registration process usually takes about 10-20 minutes. After the host has been successfully registered you will need to force your machine to drop and then re-establish its network connection. (The easiest way to do this is to reboot your machine.) When you re-establish the link, our infrastructure will configure your network port appropriately and establish a connection to the CS network.

The CS network uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to assign IP addresses to hosts. Please configure your host to use DHCP for the CS network as IP addresses may change and statically configured hosts will cause problems or may be unavailable if we make a network change.
