March 24, 2009 -- Volume 6 -- Number 1 -------------------------------------- In this issue: * ZFS Snapshot changes for Project Space * Conference Phones * McAfee Anti-Virus * Grad Quota Increased * Zimbra Mobile * Past Issues ========================== * ZFS Snapshot changes for Project Space The disk usage for snapshots of project space paritions are no longer counted against the quota for the partition. This means that deleting a file immediately frees up space in the partition. Because excessive churn (repeated cycles of creating and deleting files) can consume disk space in the common snapshot pool, CS Staff reserves the right to remove individual snapshots if we need to reclaim the space. On a related note, if you fill up your partition to 100%, there are still cases when files can't be immediately deleted. So, the moral of the story is: keep an eye on your disk usage and try not to fill it up completely. * Conference Phones We now have two additional conference phones in the building. The two new phones are permanently installed in room 233 and in room 401. The original phone is still a floater and can be used in rooms 301, 302, or 402 upon request. Please note that the new lines require a code to make long-distance calls. Details about the conference phones (and obtaining a code) can be found in the CS Guide: https://csguide.cs.princeton.edu/other/conferencephone * McAfee Anti-Virus OIT is in the process of transitioning from Symantec AntiVirus to McAfee AntiVirus software. McAfee AntiVirus may be installed on your office and personally owned home computers as long as you are a current faculty, staff, or student of the University. (If you leave the University, you must uninstall this software from your personal machines.) Details can be found in the OIT KnowledeBase. For Windows: http://helpdesk.princeton.edu/kb/display.plx?id=9548 For Mac OS X: http://helpdesk.princeton.edu/kb/display.plx?ID=9749 * Grad Quota Increased During our recent two downtimes, we installed a larger capacity disk array on our NetApp system. As a result, we have raised the default home directory quota for graduate students to 5 GB. * Zimbra Mobile With the switch of our e-mail infrastructure to the Zimbra Collaboration Suite this past Summer, the ability now exists to tightly integrate your iPhone or other SmartPhone with your Zimbra e-mail, address book, and calendar. This is an extra feature beyond the default set, called Zimbra Mobile for Smartphones. Key features of Zimbra Mobile for Smartphones: * Over-the-air synchronization of mail, address book, and calendar * Uses the native device UI, no additional mail client download required * Open / view attachments * Manage calendar events; accept / decline meetings * Easy device configuration When we deployed Zimbra last fall, we purchased a block of licenses for this add-on. At this time, we still have a number of licenses available. Members of CS Staff have been using these features for several months with excellent results. Feel free to stop by room 101 for a demo. If you have an iPhone running version 2.0 or higher software and would like to use these features, please send a message to csstaff. At this time, we are only offering "production-level" support for the iPhone. However, this extended feature set apparently works with these other smartphones: Treo 650, 680, 700 w/p, Nokia E-Series, Motorola Q, and Samsung Blackjack. If you have one of these other phones and are interested in Zimbra Mobile for Smartphone, we can attempt to set you up on an experimental ("no promises") basis. * Past Issues For you history buffs, past issues of the Gazette are now available in the CS Guide: https://csguide.cs.princeton.edu/gazette
